I was born in the North West of England in 1965. It was a long and difficult labour for my poor mother during which my brain was starved of oxygen. This left me with a condition known as Cerebral Palsy which causes me to have difficulty controlling my limbs and also a speech impediment.
However in the UK, 1 in 4 people are registered as being disabled and so it is not such an exceptional situation to be in. I have never felt that being able to walk would make me happier as, just like everyone who has this faculty, I am sure I would just take it for granted. It is human nature to always strive for more whatever our circumstances are. I believe realising and exceeding our dreams (even if it's something as simple as drawing the curtains) is what brings us joy.
My life is spanning a pioneering period in which people with disabilities are being liberated through increasingly sophisticated computer technology and changes in the attitudes of society.
Nowadays I operate a computer with my toes via a custom-built giant keyboard (pictured above) while the latest anti-discrimination legislation gives me access to most public arenas where once I would have been branded a fire hazard and excluded.
I have lived a life that has been far richer than my parents could ever have envisaged. I am employed full-time by an International IT Solutions Provider as the Performance Analyst for a Mainframe-based Bllling Application.
My two life-long loves - motor racing and Liverpool FC - have provided many wonderful experiences and Ive set foot (or set wheel to be accurate!) on 5 of the Earths continents.
Having concentrated on my education and career for over 30 years, recently I have turned my attention to living as independently as possible at home. The results have been far more than I ever imagined. I have developed both physically and mentally.
This site describes my experiences of life. While many things may relate to others I do not see it as a blueprint for all disabled people - everyone is an individual.
